Why I am at MATC

For the last eight years or so I've had the pleasure of being able to call myself a stay-at-home Dad. But with both of my boys in school full-time, it became time to do something else. My options were fairly limited, go back to work or enroll in school. Going back to work wouldn't have been completely horrible. I've got a solid amount of technical support in my background, sprinkled with some low-level software testing. But my wife wants to go back to school to be a doctor, and I can't fill in the gaps of her going part-time with a technical support rep's salary. So going back to school and picking up some new skills sounded like the right choice.

I entered the Mobile Applications Developer program for two reasons. The first being because creating programs sounds pretty fun after already having jobs fixing and breaking them. The second being because I could take all the classes online. Thus I can still maintain all my Dad related responsibilities (getting the kids to and form school and activities, keeping up the housework) without having to lock down awkward class hours. It's not completely going at my own pace, I still have deadlines to meet each week, but during the week it is on my terms and I enjoy that immensely.

I look to transition into a programming career when my program is complete, which is only a year and a half away. I'm hoping that the internship that is apart of this program gives me the extra boost to achieve that career goal. And if somehow I could eventually move over to including my favorite hobby of video gaming into my work by becoming a Game Developer, well that'd just be amazing.
